Getting More for Less

WHY should you: I personally am tired of feeling overwhelmed while accomplishing close to nothing. I would love to be able to get more and do less. I’m very sure that there are others of you out there that feel this way, and this concept will help you get there.

WHERE did it come from: This concept is from the book The ONE Thing by Gary Keller and Jay Papasan. The book is all about focusing on your ONE thing in life (or areas of your life) and getting the most done there.

WHAT is it: The concept at work here is “disproportionate results require disproportionate actions.” Let’s start by dissecting the phrase to fully understand it. “Disproportionate results” means results better than most people; it is positive and is based on the common person’s life. “Disproportionate actions” does NOT mean doing more overall, i.e. working 16 hours instead of 8 per day. It does however mean that out of the 8 hours you work, a greater proportion is spent on certain actions not others. The next logical question is, what are those actions?

The actions that you should spend a disproportionate amount of time on in order to achieve extraordinary results should be your ONE Thing, meaning the one thing that move the needle in that area of your life the most. For most salespeople, this is lead generation, because without leads you have no one to call, and therefore no one to buy your product or service. It should be easy to uncover your ONE Thing because it is usually the hardest thing that you have to do. That’s why most people don’t devote a ton of time to it, and why most people are average. You do not want to be average so you must give disproportionate time and energy to what the average people overlook in order to earn disproportionate results.

The authors argue that you should spend at a minimum four hours a day on your ONE Thing. I do not have the experience to disagree with that, just be aware that the nature of you job may require you to do less. For example in the martial arts business, you have to devote a certain number of hours to teaching classes, while the ONE thing in your stage of business might be lead generation. It might be impractical for you, but you get the idea. Devote more time to the hard things that matter more than your average person does, and you will see greater than average results.
